M. Night Shyamalan is transitioning to TV with a new show called Wayward Pines.

Here’s a synopsis along with a new TV spot:

A Secret Service agent goes to Wayward Pines, Idaho, in search of two federal agents who have gone missing in the bucolic town. He soon learns that he may never get out of Wayward Pines alive.

I have conflicted feelings about this. We all lost faith in Shyamalan a long time ago, but there was a time when he was a halfway decent filmmaker. It’s hard to say what exactly happened to him, but the prevalent theory is that he got pigeon-holed by the expectation that his films would have a mind-blowing twist like The Sixth Sense did. Maybe, just maybe, the move to a TV adaptation of a novel will free him of that problem.

The other thing about this is that it’s a blatant ripoff of Twin Peaks, with maybe a little Lost thrown in. That’s more of an observation than a judgment, though. After all, I can’t think of a better show to copy than Twin Peaks.

The show is slated to premiere on May 14th.
