Hope you haven’t eaten recently. Or at all.

One of the main reasons that horror movies are so terrifying is because they trigger our primal fears and play with common phobias.  With gory moments, especially in the slasher and torture genre, the scares are amped up because we can’t help but empathize with the person on screen being tormented.  The more gruesome and gory a scene is, the more we tense up, because deep down, we know that there is the possibility that we could face the same level of human depravity someday.  And the directors know that.  Below are 10 squeamish moments like that. Enjoy at your own risk.

1. Audition (1999)

Emetophobia warning.  Have your barf bag ready.

2. Pet Sematary (1989)

What is it about this scene? Is it the tendon cutting? The Cheshire Grin? Or the kid ripping into a man’s neck with his teeth?

3. Lucio Fulci’s Zombie (1979)

Oh god. Turn your head. TURN YOUR HEAD!!

4. Tamara (2005)

Pro tip: don’t bully people. Especially if they’re into witchcraft and can force you to kill yourself in front of the entire student body.

Seriously though; don’t be a bully.

5. The Dentist (1996)

I thought about scheduling my yearly dental appointment. Then I thought, nah better not.

6. Suspiria (1977)

And you thought nicking yourself shaving was bad.

7. Friday the 13th (1980)

It’s true what they say; smoking kills.

8. The Exorcist (1973)

Yes, this scene. Don’t pretend you didn’t cover your eyes the first time you saw it. We know you did.

9. Bloody Reunion/ To Sir With Love (2006)

Razor tea. My favorite…

10. Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy’s Revenge (1985)

Best scene in the move and perhaps even the whole franchise.  A transformation sequence that rivals the one in “American Werewolf in London.”
