Scream Episode 1.10: “Revelations”

Too busy chasing a serial killer in your own hometown to watch the season finale of MTV’s Scream last night? Strap in, kiddos; it’s a wild ride.

Screen Shot 2015-09-02 at 12.21.47 PMWe immediately picked up at the dance, where people are in a panic because a video of Sheriff Clark Hudson bleeding and tied to a tree is being projected, and Seth Branson has killed a police officer and escaped from his holding cell.  Maggie tells Emma to stay at the dance while she goes to the police station– she’ll be safer there.  Emma listens to her mom, and she and Noah stay at the dance to let the real, grown-up detectives do their jobs.

Screen Shot 2015-09-02 at 11.44.50 AMExcept that’s obviously not their style.  Emma calls Kieran to find out where he is.  Kieran doesn’t answer the call; he’s too busy loading his handgun with bullets.  Piper leaves to go to the station to get more intel.  She warns Emma not to trust anyone.

Screen Shot 2015-09-02 at 11.48.47 AMAV genius/hacker Noah gets busy trying to track the signal of the video’s origin.  He’s pretty freaked out, and for good reason: not only is the killer at large, but he can’t get hold of his BFF Audrey.  Emma texts Brooke a million times to tell her what’s going down, but Brooke isn’t answering her phone.  And then, of course, Emma gets a call from the killer.  “Tonight’s the big finale, Emma,” the killer says, “It’s gonna be gut-wrenching.” The killer tells Emma to put the pieces together, or Daisy’s heart will be broken.  Emma and Noah leave the dance to get the rest of Noah’s hacker gear.

Screen Shot 2015-09-02 at 11.41.54 AMMeanwhile, Maggie is in Medical Examiner mode at the station.  She takes crime scene photos of the slayed officer and surrounding area before giving permission to the other investigators to move the body.  Emma runs into the station and relays the killer’s message.  Maggie takes a quick look at the corpse (remember how the killer carved a clue into Will’s back?).  She pulls out a heart necklace from the body’s throat.  The same heart necklace that Brandon James gave her before he went on his murder spree.  Maggie and Emma quickly figure out that Clark is tied to the tree where Brandon used to leave her gifts Boo Radley-style.  They speed over to the tree and find Clark.  He’s still alive.  But barely.  He’s bound to the tree and gagged.  Maggie starts to cut the ropes, but by doing so, releases the one thing holding his innards in place. Yes:  the killer gutted Clark and held his intestines in place with rope so that Maggie would accidentally kill him.  Just like Emma accidentally killed Will.  It was pretty gnarly.

Screen Shot 2015-09-02 at 11.51.16 AMAs Maggie and Emma commiserate about being responsible for their boyfriends’ deaths, Noah calls Emma.  He’s done some computer stuff and has tracked a signal: Brooke’s house.  Oh, and also, there’s some malware that’s shut off everyone’s cell phone service.  The two drive over to Brooke’s and Noah tells Emma that everyone is going to die until it’s just Emma left standing: she’s the “survivor girl.”

Screen Shot 2015-09-02 at 11.53.02 AMTurns out, Brooke has been texting Emma too; she thinks Emma’s mad at her because she’s not answering her texts. It’s a hot and happenin’ night at Chez Maddox: music is blaring, drinks are freely flowing, and teenagers are lounging in the pool and hooking up with each other all over the place.  It’s classic horror movie villain bait.  Brooke is miserable because none of her friends are there.  And also, Jake is hanging out with some hot girl who is, like, totally all over him.  So lame, amirite?  Audrey’s at Brooke’s party and the two bond over the fact that people generally suck, and Brooke charges Audrey with keeping the “unwashed masses” out of her house.  Then Brooke hits on some muscly dude to make Jake jealous. It totally works.  Jake confronts Brooke and admits he was spying on her for two reasons: he was trying to protect her and he’s a jackass.  At least he’s self aware.

Screen Shot 2015-09-02 at 11.55.19 AMTo speed things up: While Brooke is brooding alone in her house, the party is cut short after some rando was found with his throat cut.  Everyone runs screaming, leaving Audrey, Brooke, and Jake in the house.  The killer pins Audrey up against a wall.  “What are you waiting for?” Audrey challenges.

Screen Shot 2015-09-02 at 12.02.20 PMBrooke emerges from her house to find that the property has been totally vacated.  And then Branson shows up.  Brooke quickly locks every nearby entrance to her stately McMansion.  Branson begs to be let in, claiming his innocence.  Brooke isn’t sure she believes him, and so outside he remains.  Until the porch lights are completely turned off.  When they’re turned back on, it’s not Branson outside: it’s– wait for it– the masked Lakewood Slasher.  Who didn’t see that coming?  Brooke runs further into her house, hiding in the freezer in the garage’s attached workshop (seriously, how big is this girl’s house?).  The killer comes in, puts a lock on the door, and starts stabbing through the walls of the freezer.  The killer then ops for a slower mode of murder: the killer plugs in the freezer to let Brooke freeze to death.  That’s pretty cold.

Screen Shot 2015-09-02 at 12.00.32 PMNoah and Emma arrive at Brooke’s house.  They find Piper’s car; there’s blood on the door.  They rush up to get into Brooke’s house and come face to face with Kieran.  He’s pointing a gun to them, but lowers it upon recognizing that Noah and Emma aren’t exactly threats.  Kieran denies anything to do with Brandon James or Brandon James’ mother.  Emma believes him and has to break the news that Kieran’s dad died.  He’s crushed and is determined to help them find the murderer.  The three run into Jake, who left the house for, like, ten minutes to collect his thoughts.  He wants to find Brooke– I mean, obviously, he’s totes in love with her.  Against Noah’s wishes, they split up to find Brooke and Audrey, who’s also missing.  Jake, Emma, and Kieran find Brooke fairly quickly– she’s close to death in the freezer.  Jake stays with her to keep her from dying of hypothermia.  Sweet.  Shortly after, Noah finds the dead body and also Audrey.  The killer cut her arm, but she’s otherwise okay.

Screen Shot 2015-09-02 at 12.07.14 PMThe five meet up on one of Brooke’s many back patios/porches.  The Slasher calls Emma on Brooke’s landline (“Landline?” Noah asks, “What is this, 1996?” Get it? Because Scream premiered in 1996? Get it? Okay, moving on.)

Screen Shot 2015-09-02 at 12.09.49 PMScreen Shot 2015-09-02 at 12.10.51 PMThe killer tells her to come and find her mother– she’s on the lake dock where Brandon James was shot to death by the police.  Emma runs to the dock to find Maggie tied to a chair.  Emma rushes over to free her mom when the killer appears.  The killer removes the mask and…

Screen Shot 2015-09-02 at 12.15.20 PMit’s Piper.

Screen Shot 2015-09-02 at 11.06.43 AMAfter mocking Emma for being so sexist as to assume that the child of Maggie and Brandon James was a son and that the killer was a man, she launches into her motive: she’s pissed at Maggie for “causing” the murder of her father and for throwing her away after she was born (a little unfair.  Maggie put Piper up for adoption; it’s not like she left her on a park bench or something).  She also resents Emma for having a perfect life.  She reveals that Branson is locked in her trunk and that he will be the “fall guy”: after she murders Emma and Maggie, she’ll crawl out of the carnage and deliver the final episode of the “Lakewood” segment of her podcast.

Screen Shot 2015-09-02 at 11.07.14 AMEmma and Maggie grapple with Piper: both women get stabbed.  Just as Piper is about to deliver a fatal strike, Audrey appears out of nowhere and shoots Piper.  She falls into the lake in a way that echoes the death of her father.  Poetic, really.  But of course, in true slasher fashion, Piper emerges from the lake and starts to hoist herself back onto the dock.  Emma shoots her in the head.  “They always come back,” Neve Campbell Emma says.  Everyone leaves in ambulances.

Screen Shot 2015-09-02 at 12.18.01 PM

The final scene features Emma and Kieran back together as a happy-ish couple, Jake deleting the last of the spyware on his laptop, Branson being released from jail, and Noah delivering the final episode of the now-deceased Piper’s true crime podcast.  We then see Audrey in her room, looking at an online article featuring her and Emma, with the headline proclaiming her a hero.  She then looks at a picture of her and Emma, some grainy photo of a person (possibly Brandon James) cowering in fear and…a box filled with the evidence from the original Brandon James murders and a ton of handwritten letters from Piper addressed to her.  What the what?!  The last thing we see is Audrey burning the contents of the box.

Screen Shot 2015-09-02 at 11.28.18 AMIt’s probably a good thing that Scream was renewed for another season.
