“The world will die screaming”– Last words of death row inmate Martin Bellman- Il Sonnambulo copycat killer

The third episode of Hannah and Douglas Rath’s web series Il Sonnambulo features a nasty, gut-wrenching twist.  Here’s what happened in “Abyss”:

We rejoin Atticus and Roberto in the latter’s apartment.  The two look through Roberto’s files about Il Sonnambulo’s victims and talk about the sigil found in the museum.  Atticus reveals that he always knows about the murders before the police do because of the 2:37 am phone calls– a detail that has never been released to public because it would only help copycat killers.  Apparently Atticus has received 377 of these phone calls; Il Sonnambulo isn’t restricted to London.  It’s also revealed that the police couldn’t find any evidence connecting the disappearance of Atticus’ daughter Lucy to Il Sonnambulo, except for the presence of the killer’s sigil.  Atticus then receives a phone call.  Before answering it, he advises Roberto not to stick around.

Screen Shot 2015-11-24 at 11.11.39 AMWe then see a child dancing around and woman pushing a stroller on a pond-side path.  The footage is shown backwards, giving it a disturbing and eerie effect.

Screen Shot 2015-11-24 at 11.04.40 AMBack to Atticus and Roberto.  Atticus tries again to dissuade Roberto from coming with him to the crime scene, and packs his camera and a pistol into a bag.  He warns Roberto that what he will see will ruin him.  “I’ve been to Syria,” Roberto says, “I think I’ll be alright.”  In the car on the way to the crime scene, Atticus informs his partner that they are actually early– he wants to confront Il Sonnambulo and find his daughter. Roberto receives a call from his girlfriend Zoe.  Once again, he ignores it.

Screen Shot 2015-11-24 at 11.06.14 AMWhen they arrive at the crime scene, Atticus gives Roberto one last chance to back out.  “Nothing that you can imagine is going to prepare you for this,” Atticus says, “If you go over there, the person you’ve been your entire life will no longer exist.”  Still, Roberto is determined to get his story.  A journalist’s gotta do what a journalist’s gotta do.  As they walk over to the body, Atticus gives a final word of warning: sometimes the victim is still alive.

Screen Shot 2015-11-24 at 11.09.12 AMThe walk up to a round, fenced in pagoda-like building.  Il Sonnambulo’s sigil is carved into the high ceiling.  As Roberto sees his first glance of the body (not shown), we see a flashback of the first phone call he ignores from Zoe.  Roberto’s face crumbles into horror and grief– he knows the victim.  Is it Zoe?

Screen Shot 2015-11-24 at 11.10.38 AMWe then see the woman and dancing child again, this time, the footage shown normally.  In the background, a voicemail from Zoe plays: “Hey! I went to get your kids, but the school said you nanny already picked them up.  Thanks for the heads up. I drove all the way over there for nothing. What time you coming back? Call me.”

The last image we see is Il Sonnambulo walking down a street, shrouded in darkness, and tapping his cane.
