Moby Dick in Space.

The 3 ½ minute proof of concept video for Irish filmmaker Ruairi Robinson’s new project The Leviathan has been causing quite a stir.

Seen by over two million people in just one week, it has now been announced that Neill Blomkamp (District 9; Chappie) and Simon Kinberg (X-Men: Days of Future Past; Star Wars: The Force Awakens) have boarded the project as producers.

The beautiful concept video explains that:

“Mankind has colonized many worlds in a time when travel faster than the speed of light has been made possible by the harvesting of exotic matter from the eggs of the largest species mankind has ever seen. Those that take part in the hunt for the matter are mostly involuntary labor.”

Blomkamp and Kinberg are no strangers to sci-fi, with both acting as creative consultants to sci-fi and fantasy films; and with Kinberg’s close ties to Fox and Lucasfilm, it is likely the project will find a studio home.

If made, The Leviathan, will be set in the future where astronauts seem to be hunting whale-like creatures in space. Fight Club screenwriter Jim Uhls will pen the film.

Robinson was last seen directing The Last Days on Mars and was previously attached to Akira.
