“Scream” Episode 1.05 “Exposed”

In case you were too busy doing other things last night and didn’t watch the most recent episode of “Scream” on MTV, here’s a quick recap of what you missed (spoiler warning):

After a video of Emma’s first sexual experience with Will surfaces and is accidentally distributed to everyone at school, Emma faces stares, whispering, and gif-making courtesy of her classmates, much like Audrey did in the first episode after a video of her making out with Rachel was disseminated.  If you remember from episode 1.04, Audrey and Noah discovered the video after making a copy of the hard drive of the deceased Tyler’s laptop and accidentally sent it to their entire student body.  Instant and brutal karma, it seems, because Emma was partially responsible for Audrey’s video fiasco.  Appropriately (and predictably), the book that is being discussed in Mr. Branson’s English class is Nathanial Hawthorne’s novel The Scarlet Letter.

Screen Shot 2015-07-29 at 12.17.16 PMMeanwhile, everyone is still dealing with, you know, the brutal murders of four people in their town, and so a candlelight vigil is organized by Emma and her remaining friends.  While Emma is delivering a heartfelt eulogy, she receives yet another threatening text message from the unidentified killer, saying that if she tells the police about the correspondence, her mother will be killed.  Quite the dilemma since one of the leading detectives asks her to come in to answer a few questions.  During the interview, Emma gives half answers and insists she doesn’t know anything that could help the police.

Screen Shot 2015-07-29 at 12.21.52 PMDuring this episode, we were also treated to some disturbing insight into Mayor Maddox’s private life. Maddox, if you remember, is Brooke’s creepy dad.  Brooke’s mother has been absent thus far, explained away by Brooke’s offhand remarks about her going to an ashram in Sri Lanka. Except, as Maddox reveals to Brooke, who is distressed because her mother has not contacted her, Mrs. Maddox is actually in rehab.  That isn’t the disturbing part though (come on, plenty of affluent parents go to rehab).  Maddox is currently being extorted by two masked men who are in possession of some sort of incriminating video.  The blackmailers are revealed to be none other than Will and Jake.

Screen Shot 2015-07-29 at 12.24.25 PMIn a previous episodes, Jake convinced Will to “pick up where Tyler left off.” While the details haven’t exactly been spelled out, Tyler and Nina had a sex-tape/extortion ring going on before they were killed.  While Will was reluctant to continue the business, he was accepted to his first choice university and needs tuition money since his father will not co-sign a loan.  Jake, on the other hand, seems to really enjoy the power trip he’s on.

Screen Shot 2015-07-29 at 12.34.03 PMAfter Brooke is told the “truth” (remains to be seen) about her mom, she invites Jake over to hang out and vent about her awful parents.  Jake, although sketchy, obnoxious, and vaguely misogynist, decides to be a good friend to Brooke and show her a surveillance video of her father dragging what looks to be a wrapped-up corpse out of the trunk of his car.  With the date stamp correlating to the day after Brooke’s mom left.  Yikes.

Screen Shot 2015-07-29 at 12.37.47 PMOther fun tidbits from last night’s episode:

– Audrey kicks Will’s ass in a self-defense workshop at school.

– The True Crime podcast journalist Piper Shay’s father was murdered when she was a kid.

– Will only started dating Emma because of a bet to see if he could sleep with her.

– Noah and Audrey figure out that a malware that hacks into the webcams of smartphones and laptops is connected to Mr. Branson’s class’ server (if you remember, Mr. Branson is having an affair with Brooke).

– Emma and mysterious-new-guy Kieran hook up after he tries to teach her how to use a handgun

What We Want To Know:

– Did Mayor Maddox murder his wife?

– Will anyone take the heat for the (disturbingly accepted) sex crimes happening? Come on: Emma and Will were minors when they were filmed having sex (child pornography); Emma didn’t consent to being filmed (sexual assault and exploitation); Mr. Branson is, among other crimes, committing statutory rape (Brooke is seventeen, but Branson is in a position of authority).

– When will Jake and Will be murdered and how gruesome and bloody will it be?

– What exactly is Kieran’s deal?

and of course

– Who is behind all the murders in Lakewood and what is their motive?
