Jason Mitchell is the latest star to join the 2017 film.

Jason Mitchell, most recently seen in the critically-acclaimed hit Straight Outta Compton, is “in negotiations” to join the cast of Legendary’s Kong: Skull Island.

Should he join, he’ll be reunited with Compton co-star Corey Hawkins. Mitchell plays rapper Eazy-E and Hawkins plays Dr. Dre in the film. Tom Hiddleston, Brie Larson and Toby Kebbell are also, according to The Hollywood Reporter, “already on the manifest of the ship that takes a crew of explorers to the mysterious, creature-laden isle that is also the home of Kong, the king of the apes. Insiders say that Mitchell will play an easygoing pilot.”

Jordan Vogt-Roberts is set to direct the project and screenwriter Derek Connolly was just brought on for rewrites.

Production is set to begin in late-October in Hawaii. The movie is scheduled for a March 10, 2017 release.

The Reporter adds, “This is [Mitchell’s] first deal since bursting off the screen in Compton, in which he portrayed the key member of N.W.A who died of complications from AIDS in 1995.”
