If you’ve been online in the past 24 hours, you may have come across a short film titled The Chickening.  Written, directed, and produced by Davy Force and Nick DenBoer, it made its debut last year at the Toronto International Film Festival, and just screened at the Sundance Film Festival.  The Chickening was so successful at the festivals, that Force and DenBoer decided to grace the Internet with a wide release of their film, and posted it to DenBoer’s Vimeo account.

The Chickening is, in essence, a trippy, mind-bending remix of Stanley Kubrick’s iconic film The Shining, based upon Stephen King’s novel of the same name.  DenBoer and Force used actual, selected footage from the film and spliced it with digital effects and house music.

To say that The Chickening is disturbing would be a gross understatement.  In 5 minutes, Force and DenBoer manage to twist an already-terrifying horror movie into a brightly colored, hallucinatory nightmare that is somehow simultaneously horrifying and darkly comedic.  The film reimagines The Shining‘s Overlook Hotel as a poultry-themed hotel-slash-amusement park, and features a deep-voiced, mustachioed Danny, a wise guy-esque Tony, and a hapless Wendy who can’t seem to focus her eyes.

The Chickening is one of those phenomenons that you really need to see to believe, so check out the video below!
